Trivia
- According to a note found in one of the secret rooms in Monkey Business
Going by the theory suggesting that each nightmare portal is tied to one of Dante Alighieri’s Nine Layers of Hell and the monsters inside them are manifestations of sin, the Murder Monkeys may represent Violence since they were all murderers in real life and sacrificed their humanity to become monsters.
, it is revealed that the Murder Monkeys are the twisted souls of humans who were violent murderers when they were alive, turned into destructive monkeys because in life they gave in to their animalistic urge to kill.
- The Murder Monkeys themselves seem to represent how Doug murdered his own family (intentionally or otherwise), while the hotel seems to represent Doug’s infidelity to his wife, if his mistress’ mention of «monkey business in some hotel» is anything to go by.
- While running around, a door may open, revealing a monkey peeking from behind it. These monkeys do not harm the player, however, and close the door shortly after.
- In their original designs, the monkeys originally didn’t have an oversized head as they do in the current version, look less detailed, and had less bloody teeth, They also had an animation when turning the corner, as if sliding.
- The monkeys have a walking animation. This animation can be barely seen slightly when using the Telepathy power in the level after unlocking it. The monkeys will only do this when they are a certain distance from the player as seen here.
- The monkeys were inspired by the promo cover for a horror movie called «Monkey Shines,» when the creator of Dark Deception was young, they thought the movie was about a monkey similar to the Murder Monkeys themselves.
- The Murder Monkeys are also mentioned in Chapter 2, appearing on posters, and hand drawings on the walls around the school. Agatha also mentions the Monkeys in one of her quotes.
- The Murder Monkeys may represent Pithecophobia (fear of apes) and/or Robophobia (fear of robots). They may also represent ludilophobia, the fear of toys (similar to the Dread Duckies and the Trigger Teddies), and Aichmophobia (the fear of sharp things, including knives).
- In the alpha, there were originally four Murder Monkeys in the hotel’s kitchen cutting up food. These have since been replaced by cardboard cutouts wearing chef outfits.
- In the alpha version, the Murder Monkeys can spin their heads around in 360 degrees.
- Unlike other enemies in Dark Deception, the Murder Monkeys’ ability to turn around are inferior compared to other enemies, since they will stop for a variable amount of time ‘glitching’ before turning around.
- If the player is sandwiched by two monkeys and decides to teleport through one of them, the facing monkeys will be momentarily stuck as they cannot turn immediately. This only applies to a replay run after the player has acquired the Teleportation ability.
- The Murder Monkeys might also be based on Cymbal Monkeys, also known as the Musical Jolly Clapping Chimp Monkey.
- The Cardboard cutouts in the hotel are presumably supposed to be Murder Monkeys, but they lack the oversized head and bladed hands.
- The Murder Monkeys have an idle animation. While rarely seen, this animation can be seen when:
- When guarding the entrance portal for «Crazy Carnevil».
- Being trapped in a cage alongside with a lifeless Dread Ducky in the same aforementioned level. It’s important to note that in both of these instances, the monkeys don’t seem to pose harm or react to the player aggressively.
- Performing a glitch near the end of the level where lots of monkeys chase the player.
- Like the other monsters, they can’t reach the player when inside of a secret room; they will just wait around outside the room.
- Originally, as shown the old 2014 Kickstarter page for Dark Deception, the developers of Glowstick Games (Glowstick Entertainment’s old name) had stated that the backers for Dark Deception’s Kickstarter campaign could get a Murder Monkey plush as a reward.
- So far, the Murder Monkeys, Malak, Gold Watchers, and the Clown Cars are the only enemies in Dark Deception that always know the whereabouts of the player’s location.
- «Monkey Business» has a scrapped moment, where the Murder Monkey breaks through the door near the ring altar and runs towards the player, which could have likely been the early idea for the escape sequence of the level. This can be seen here.
Appearance
The Dread Duckies appear as large duck floats made of hard, plastic-like material, with round stubby wings, a jaw with rotten, human teeth, and large hollow eyes of asymmetrical sizes. Their lower jaws appear to be able to rotate open and closed. Their bodies are covered in grime and blemishes, due to floating in sewer water. They also wear dirty, traffic cones on top of their heads.
Inside their mouths is a mechanical spring attached to a smaller, spherical duck head with vertical pupils and several rows of sharp teeth. Their beaks are also longer and narrower.
Underneath their body is a large hole where two grotesque, shriveled, rotten legs, which the Dread Duckies use to move around once they’re active.
In their «Nightmare» Modes, the Dread Duckies’ bodies turn into a slightly darker shade-color, as the ducky in their mouth has a light gray shade-color, that has sharp spikes to represent sharp teeth, and like previous enemies, have red-glowing eyes. They also appear to be grimier, with the grime being darker in-color as well.
Monsters & Mortals
This article contains information on a subject that isn’t considered canon in Dark Deception franchise.
The Dread Ducky returns as a playable monster in Monsters & Mortals.
As a Monster of the Balanced class Dread Ducky performs equally in movement speed, damage, attack cooldown, and has average Hp for a Monster. Making it a great beginner’s choice to learn the games «ropes». Interestingly Dread Ducky’s light attack has more range than their heavy attack, making it great for attacking while running away and chasing foes. It attacks with the mechanical spring in its mouth (light attack) and headbutting (heavy attack).
Its ultimate ability, «Ducky Surprise», when used will grab and pull a foe in close and damage them. This is highly efficient for killing an enemy just out of reach. This will do 18 damage per bite and if used entirely it will do a maximum of 234 damage. If the target survives the surprise with an item or is a fully healed Monster (except Speed) they will be stunned for 2 seconds. Giving you time to run or attack.
Team | Monsters |
Class | Balanced |
Health | 240 |

Heavy Attack Damage | 60 |
Ultimate Ability | Ducky Surprise |
UA Description | Dread Ducky hooks the target and reels them in close, unleashing a biting barrage on its stunned victim. |

Skins
Image | Name | Rarity | Appearance |
---|---|---|---|
Nightmare Mode | Common |
Nightmare Mode Collection
In the Nightmare Mode skin, the Dread Ducky retains the same look as they have in the original game. |
|
Bone Ducky | Common |
Halloween Collection
In the Bone Ducky skin, the Dread Ducky is now entirely white with 3 black stripes across it’s body as if they were a ribcage and their traffic cone is now a single black color. |
|
Flamingo | Rare | In the Flamingo skin, the Dread Ducky’s entire body is coated pink, obscuring most of the grime across its body. Its bill is also painted blue with a black tip. Its traffic cone hat has been painted blue as well with multiple pineapples drawn over it. |
Appearance
The Murder Monkeys appear as anthropomorphic monkeys. They lack any real hands, as they have been replaced with large bloody blades or knives on their sleeves instead.
To accentuate their heavily deranged appearance and nature, their heads are bigger than their humanoid body with their mouths filled with sharp bloody teeth. They have large, beady eyes, with pink lines over their eyes and the left eye being a lazy eye. Unlike real monkeys, however, they lack a tail completely. On their backs are large wind-up keys, meaning that they are probably robotic, or like a wind-up toy.
They wear red bellhop uniforms with yellow buttons and stripes, with black collars and forearms, as well as a red hat, with grey pants on their lower body. Once the Monkeys go into a nightmare mode, their eyes will glow red, and their clothing will turn purple.
Vanish
The Vanish ability is unlocked before starting «Mascot Mayhem».
This power makes the player invisible from the sight of the enemies and security cameras in Mascot Mayhem. It’s very useful when they need to pass through a waves of enemies, however it’s isn’t effective against bosses and Malak, and the player can still be killed if they had contact with the lethal traps or enemies. Certain enemies react to vanish in different ways:
- The Murder Monkeys slowly walk towards the player, since they always know the player’s location.
- Agatha, Dread Duckies, Clown Gremlins, The Reaper Nurses, Lucky the Rabbit, Penny the Chicken, Hangry the Pig, and Trigger Teddies go back to their wandering states.
- The Gold Watchers and Mama Bear freeze in their current position until the effect ends.
Trivia
- Each power that the player has unlocked is connected to the abilities of the first six monsters of Dark Deception.
- The Murder Monkeys
Although somewhat unrelated, in «Mascot Mayhem», Lucky the Rabbit is capable of using his own Speed Boost to catch up the player during a chase.
possess the power of Speed Boost, as they normally wander around slowly, speeding up to a run after they catch sight of the player.
- Agatha possesses the power of Teleportation, as she constantly teleports in the School level. In Zone 2, she’ll begin actively using her teleportation power to catch the player off guard. In Dark Deception Enhanced, she also uses it back-to-back during her boss fight, appearing and disappearing around the room repeatedly to catch the player.
- The Gold Watchers possess the power of Telepathy, as they are always aware of the player’s location, regardless of where they are.
- The Dread Duckies possess the power of Primal Fear, as they are capable of stunning the player from a distance with their inner mouths.
- The Clown Gremlins somewhat possess the power of Telekinesis, since they can attract nearby Clown Gremlins if they spot the player, as is demonstrated in Zone 2. And they can control the car that they used for transport, as demonstrated in Zone 1.
- The Reaper Nurses possess the power of Vanish, as they can turn invisible for a short period of time to ambush the player.
- The Murder Monkeys
- As confirmed by one of the Reaper Nurses, these powers were previously owned by Malak
In Bearly Buried, Malak himself also states that these powers are his as he exclaims in the second and third zone, «Those are my powers!» as the player uses them.
.
- Strangely, both the Telekinesis and Vanish power reuse the same sound effect as Primal Fear. This might possibly be a placeholder.
Personality
“ | It seems some of the duckies are not as hollow as they appear. Instead, they contain the rotten souls of liars, flushed down to the sewers and left to decay. They are now creatures of deception, as they were in life. | ” |
– E, describing what the Dread Duckies really are |
While being disguised as docile duckies, these «Dummy» Duckies pretend to have no personality. Once they are active, however, the Dread Duckies reveal themselves to be sadistic, aggressive, and bloodthirsty, relentlessly chasing Doug down should he come near. Anytime they do manage to catch Doug when they stun or kill him, they will take the chance to mock him by dancing and quacking. These traits are further amplified in their «Nightmare» forms, additionally becoming a lot more persistent and eager to killing Doug.
The Dread Duckies are also shown to be rather lazy in pursuing Doug, as throughout the level they usually never attack him unless he’s near, only chasing him consistently if asked to do so by higher beings like Malak and the Doom Ducky. Nonetheless, they will still take the opportunity to kill Doug as long as they see him, and they show some attempt at strategy at hindering him later on by blocking certain pathways.
Traps
Banana Peels
According to the game files, the banana peels from Monsters & Mortals were originally going to be added to the base game’s «Monkey Business» level at some point during the development (possibly during the Enhanced Edition update), but got scrapped for unknown reasons. That being said, you can still spawn the scrapped banana peels into the game through Unreal Engine 4 commands. (Here’s the proof: )
Getting into contact with the banana peel will cause the player to immediately get stunned, making it currently the only trap in Dark Deception that can stun the player aside from enemies. However, it doesn’t force the player to mash the «F» keyboard button as it only paralyze the player in one location temporarily for few seconds while the screen glows orange.
Trivia
- According to a note found in one of the secret rooms, the Dread Duckies are the souls of anyone who had hidden malicious intentions behind an innocent façade. This would explain their overall behavior of camouflaging as one of the fake Dread Duckies to blend in and ambush Doug unexpectedly.
- The secret room in their Nightmare implies that they represent how Doug viewed his wife and daughter as «defective» and «insufferable» thanks to their mental disorders and disabilities. This partially explain the fact that they’re abandoned toys inhabiting the sewers, where they were left forgotten, and their method of camouflaging with the other fake Dread Duckies.
- In Chapter 3’s preview, the Dread Ducky’s silhouette turns towards the viewer before cutting to black.
- The device duck head is confirmed to be inspired by the evil-looking toy duck from «Nightmare Before Christmas»
- They may represent anatidaephobia, the fear to ducks and geese, and/or ludilophobia, the fear of toys (similar to the Murder Monkeys and the Trigger Teddies). Another possible phobia could be hydrophobia, the fear of water, cloacaphobia, fear of sewers, or submechanophobia, the fear of submerged man-made objects.
- Due to a brief scene of a Dread Ducky being animated, (seen in Devlog #5 at 5:39) it has become a joke which some have started to call the «Dread Ducky Dance».
- In addition, on April 27th, 2019, a short video on Twitter by the developer titled «Duck Season» was uploaded, which showed a Dread Ducky dancing.
- In one of the secret elevators of the Sewer, four Dread Duckies can be found dancing behind the bars of the secret room.
- The Dread Duckies are currently the only enemies in Dark Deception that don’t have a static spawn location at any time. They will automatically spawn at random locations.
- So far, the Dread Duckies, Doom Ducky, the Reaper Nurses, Penny the Chicken and Joy Kill are the only enemies that have the ability to stun Doug.
- So far, Dread Duckies, Doom Ducky, Reaper Nurses, Penny the Chicken, Joy Kill, and the Trigger Teddies are the only enemies in Dark Deception to have a long-range attack.

Appearance
The Matron appears to be an overly obese woman, with unnaturally pale skin, wearing a dirty Reaper Nurse’s uniform, slightly different from that of a Reaper Nurse, and has noticeable stripes on the arm-regions of the shirt and a few dirt stains are found on it.
Like the Reaper Nurses, she also wears a bag with a black first aid symbol on her head and a red helmet comb on the top. Like the Reaper Nurses, her legs have wheels, although they are connected to a metal bar with visible metal restraints on the legs that completely replace her feet.
As for her size, she is alarmingly big as she appears to be not only larger than the Reaper Nurses, but an entire ambulance as well.
Appearance
Humanoid
In his humanoid form, Malak very closely resembles a human of a slim, tall build. He is always seen dressed in formal attire, wearing a black business tuxedo with a red tie, slim black undershirt, long striped trousers, and polished shoes. His hands both have three sharp claws for fingers, with black skin. His head resembles that of a typical demon, with red skin, hollowed-out eyes, jagged teeth, pointed ears, and curved horns.
Phantom
In his phantom form, Malak dons a large black cloak with torn edges and long sleeves. His lower body is also absent, ending at his overcoat. He now possesses more dark and jagged skin, glowing orange eyes and mouth, and slim, cone-shaped horns. His hands also now have four fingers instead of three.
Act I
“ | You’ve gathered half the shards. Try to live long enough to get the rest. | ” |
– Bierce, upon collecting all shards in zone 1. |
Act I is straight-forward. Collect all the soul shards, all while avoiding six Dread Duckies and short spike traps. The player has to be extremely cautious while collecting soul shards since the Dread Duckies will be blending in with the other lifeless dread duckies thus it is advisable for the player to use the new power to see which of the many duckies are an actual Dread Ducky (They’re highlighted in red). The Dread Duckies will not move from their current location until the player gets in close proximity. upon collecting all soul shards in act I, the Dread Duckies will vanish.
When all of the soul shards in the first zone are collected, the entrance to the central chamber will be unlocked. Upon entering, a violent roar will occur, followed by rumbling of the Doom Ducky with Bierce ignoring it claiming it is nothing to be concerned of. The ring altar, still guarded, can be seen to the left. On the other end of the room is the entrance to zone 2.
Act III
“ | You know, you’re the first of Bierce’s pets to actually cause me some trouble. I should commend you for your tenacity. | ” |
– Malak, confronting the player in Doom Ducky’s chamber. |
After the ring altar is interacted with, a short cutscene will play, where Malak compliments the player, saying that they are the first of Bierce’s «pets» to cause some trouble for him. Afterwards, he says that he too has a loyal pet of his own, and proceeds to teleport away, revealing the Doom Ducky.
A boss fight starts, where the player has to dodge Doom Ducky’s attacks, which consists of throwing duckies at the player if far from it, stunning them if close, and a long-ranged attack, similar to the Dread Duckies. The player needs to wait for the Doom Ducky to perform the long-ranged attack, and hide behind a pillar. This will stun the Doom Ducky, and allows the player to turn the valves in the middle of the room. This has to be done twice for each valve. Once the first valve has been activated, a Dread Ducky appears. It acts like any other Dread Ducky but gets stunned when the Doom Ducky is stunned. A second Dread Ducky will spawn once the second valve is activated.
Trivia
- Chapter 4 has more soundtracks than all previous chapters combined, with 21 soundtracks. Collectively, the previous chapters only have 20 soundtracks.
- Some soundtracks are specific to certain zones, according to Vince.
- On February 25th, 2019, the Chapters 1-3 tracks were released on streaming devices, such as Spotify or iTunes
On January 31st, 2020, the Chapter 4 tracks were released on iTunes, Deezer and on HearNow
.
- The «Pizza Time!» theme from Monsters & Mortals is a reference to the 2004 Spider-Man 2 video game, which featured a remix of Neapolitan song «Funiculì, Funiculà» that plays during pizza delivery missions. The title of the soundtrack is a nod to the film it is based on, where Spider-Man utters the phrase to a desk clerk after delivering a stack of pizzas.
- Also, The soundtrack «Trigger Teddy Picnic» references the soundtrack «Gruntilda’s Lair» from the 1998 video game «Banjo-Kazooie» (Not the entire track, just a certain section of it).
- «The Brute» and «Wandering Alone on a Ship at Night» are both named after soundtracks from Monstrum.
- The track that plays when Agatha is chasing the player quotes one of the things she says when chasing the player.
- In the Alpha, Chapter 1’s tracks had different names;
- The «Monkey Business» track was called «Monkey Maze.»
- The «Feeding Frenzy» track was called «Monkey Panic.»
- The «Darkness Calls» track was called «Bierce’s Theme.»
- The track that plays when the Gold Watchers are nearby the player is a pun on the phrase «mind your manners,» meaning to be polite.
- «Big Top Trouble» is one of the only tracks in the Dark Deception OST with a 3/4 time signature.
- Besides the Latin-like voices in the background and chase OST of «Deadly Decadence«, «Joy Joy Ditty», «Uninvited Guest», «Closing Time» and «Lesson Learned» are the only Dark Deception songs to have lyrics.
- The pre-alpha, alpha, and Chapter 1 music were produced and composed by Chris Pinkston, while every music starting from Chapter 2 by Dan Dombrowsky.
- In the 7th Q&A, Vince confirmed that he named all the musics in the OST.
- Chef Frenzy is the only cut track to return to the Enhanced version of the game.

Прохождение Dark Deception Chapter 1

Doug’s Mother’s notes
The first note is located at Zone 3 of Bearly Buried. It’s inside one of the secret room. Touch one of the wall and you’ll found the room which contain the notes resting in a rock.
The second note shared the same location as the first one. It’s attached to the left side of the room.
February 11th, 1960 Happy birthday my little Dougie! Five years old! You’re getting so big! Do you know how much I love you? I’ll see you when I get home, sweetheart. Always remember that I love you! Love you forever & ever! -Mom |
March 4th, 1963 Dougie is 8 now. I shouldn’t hate him, but i can’t help it. Everyday he looks more & more like his father. He acts & sounds more and more like him too. He used to be sweet & cute. Now when I look at him all I see is that miserable bastard’s face. It’s makes me feel sick to my stomach that I’m raising him by myself, while he’s out there enjoying his life with some tramp somewhere. Life is never fair. The other day, he dropped one of the glasses in the kitchen. Such a simple thing, but it instantly filled me with an uncontrollable rage. I locked him in a closet as punishment — mainly so that I wouldn’t beat him. He begged me to let him out and said that the dark scared him. The other mothers would be shocked to hear me say this, but I enjoyed hearing him beg. I left him in there for hours. He eventually stopped crying. Maybe I never had any maternal instincts to begin with? That thought doesn’t bother me so much anymore though Now all I can think, everyday, is that I should have listened to my mother. When he was born, she told me to give him up and I didn’t listen. She told me not to marry his father and I didn’t listen to that either. I should have listened. I was such a foolish girl. There are so many thing I could have done. So many dreams I might have fulfilled. Now I’m trapped and time just keep going by faster and faster. When I look at myself in the mirror, I can see my age starting to set in. I’m not as young as I once was and raising him is wasting what little youth I have left. I spend every moment either working to provide for him or taking care of him. It never ends! It feels like I can’t breathe. I also can’t abandon him even if I wanted to. It’s against the law after all. Not to mention that once word got around. I’d be a pariah in the community. They’d all judge and cast me out! Of course, nobody judged him for leaving. No, not him. He’s a man. His buddies probably gave him high fives and cheap cigars to celebrate. Meanwhile, I’m stuck here with his brat. Being a single mother is hard. For now, all I can do is make him suffer every now and then. He can suffer as I have suffered. |
Behavior
“ | The monkeys can always see you. Don’t stop running! | ” |
– a Death Tip from Monkey Business |
The Murder Monkeys are always aware of the player’s location and will relentlessly pursue them throughout the level. They will always maintain a pace faster than their regular walking speed, and will not slow down unless they are stunned. They will also take the shortest path to the player, allowing them to surround the player in corner rooms.
They will often make breathing sounds and can be heard slashing their knives when close by. To avoid the Murder Monkeys, it is highly recommended to group them together or obtain a red shard to predict their movements. When stunned, the Murder Monkeys will stay still and lean their heads forward, bobbing them in a dazed condition.

Monkey Business
The Murder Monkeys first appear in the «Monkey Business» level, as the only enemies of the Hotel map.
Intro
Before the level starts, one can be seen in an elevator. When the protagonist approaches the monkey at a fair distance, the Monkey will squeal with the elevator closing on it.
Act I
Once the player enters the maze, a total of three monkeys will mindlessly chase the player, cutting them off if they try to outsmart them. Upon activation, they will spawn in the bottom right, bottom left, and top right corners of the map.
Once the player grabs the ring piece, the monkeys will disappear. Despite that, the monkeys are making screeching sounds at the outside of the room you’re in. Once the player goes in the elevator, a Nightmare Monkey will burst through a door and attempt to kill the player, but the elevator door closes in its face.
Final Act
Upon exiting the elevator to leave through the lobby, 12 monkeys, now in their nightmare mode, emerge from the adjacent elevator doors and pursue the player. Malak’s voice tells the player that they cannot escape, one monkey also pops up from the receptionist desk to prevent the player from escaping, but the player escapes the monkeys and returns through the portal.
