The Blessing of the Abyss[]

Spoiler warning: The following section contains spoilers. Read with caution.

An exceedingly rare and top secret phenomenon occasionally takes place within the Abyss under very specific circumstances. It was first discovered by the White Whistle Delver Bondrewd when he was experimenting with the Curse of the 6th layer. Much like with the Curse of the Abyss, the event occurs during the ascent, but two people are needed to trigger the phenomenon. If one person bears the entire burden of the Curse for both people (through the use of an Artifact or another similar instrument), the other is spared the effects of the curse.

Bondrewd modified several Artifacts to create an elevator to observe the Blessing phenomenon. This two-chambered elevator carries two people but forces the entire weight of the Curse onto a single person. If the person receiving the Curse doesn’t die midway through, the other is spared the Curse’s effects. Bondrewd discovered deep love between the two people results in the event he called a «Blessing» for the one who does not receive the burden of the Curse. While the Blessing was experimentally demonstrated, Bondrewd cannot explain the reasons behind it.

The appearance of the blessed changes. They grow fur all over their body and some of their traits, like the eyes or fingers, become mutated. The Blessing is not merely in looks: The one gifted gains the ability to observe the force field of the Abyss, something that only the predators of the deep are able to see, and is an incredibly useful ability for delving in the pit. It also appears to increase their physical fortitude to some extent.

Appearance[]

Ozen is a very tall and rather slim woman who stands over 2 meters in height. She has a strangely shaped monochrome hairstyle that conceals the scalp deformations caused by the intensive exposure to the Curse of the Abyss.

Her eyes are pitch black and lusterless, giving her a rather unsettling and disturbing gaze. When fully equipped for delving, she wears bulky armor and a disc-shaped hat that covers her eyes.

Her White Whistle is adorned with a pair of horns, giving it a bovine appearance. Despite being more than half a century old, she appears quite youthful, with only her white hair showing her age.

Breath[]

The breath meter drains faster in the Abyss, with each deeper layer applying more severe breath loss. Players with zero breath in the Abyss will lose health far more rapidly than if they were drowning in normal water. Finally, the Crush Depth debuff is commonly inflicted by enemies in the Abyss and causes the player’s breath to drain even quicker. These conditions make underwater breathing equipment a necessity for players wishing to explore the Abyss.

The first layer of the Abyss reduces the player’s breath by 2 every tenth of a second, resulting in a net loss of 20 breath per second. Each layer beyond the first reduces the player’s breath three times as quickly as the previous: the second layer takes away 60 breath per second, the third layer takes away 180, and the fourth takes away 540.

The Abyss ignores all items that normally grant permanent underwater breathing, such as the Gills Potion, Neptune’s Shell, and the Ocean Crest. These items are still useful as they separately help reduce the breath loss the Abyss applies to the player.

Breath loss rate

The following items reduce how frequently the Abyss takes breath away from the player. These effects add together to create an overall delay multiplier that slows down the Abyss’ breath loss:

  • Gills buff or Ocean Crest: +4
  • Any item which lets the player ignore water physics, as listed below: +5
  • The Absorber
  • The Amalgam
  • Aquatic Heart
  • Auric Tesla Royal Helm
  • Auric Tesla Hooded Facemask
  • Auric Tesla Wire-Hemmed Visage
  • Auric Tesla Space Helmet
  • Auric Tesla Plumed Helm
  • Bloodflare Horned Helm
  • Bloodflare Hydra Hood
  • Bloodflare Imp Mask
  • Bloodflare Ram Mask
  • Bloodflare Wyvern Helm
  • Fin Wings (Also inherits Gills)
  • Fishron Wings
  • Flipper Potion
  • Hardy Saddle
  • Leviathan Ambergris
  • Mollusk Shellmet
  • Omega Blue Helmet
  • Reaver Helm
  • Reaver Visage
  • Reaver Mask
  • Reaver Helmet
  • Reaver Headgear
  • Sea Shell
  • Shrimpy Truffle
  • Sulphurous armorSet bonus
  • The Sponge
  • Tarragon Helm
  • Tarragon Visage
  • Tarragon Mask
  • Tarragon Horned Helm
  • Tarragon Helmet
  • Victide armorSet bonus
  • A full set of Victide armor: +10 (ignores water physics and adds +5 on its own)
  • Diving Helmet, Diving Gear, or Jellyfish Diving Gear: +10
  • Aquatic Emblem: +14 (inherits Gills and adds +10 on its own)
  • Neptune’s Shell, Moon Shell, or Celestial Shell: +15
  • Aquatic Heart after Skeletron has been defeated: +20 (ignores water physics and adds +15 on its own)
  • Arctic Diving Gear or Abyssal Diving Gear: +20 (inherits Diving Helmet and adds +10 on its own)
  • Abyssal Diving Suit: +39 (inherits Abyssal Diving Gear and Gills and adds +15 on its own)

The delay multiplier is capped at 50. The Abyss takes away breath times more slowly from the player.

Breath loss amount

The following items reduce the quantity of breath taken away by the Abyss. These effects do not multiply together. Rather, they add onto each other and create an overall percentage to reduce the Abyss’ breath loss by:

  • Gills buff, Ocean Crest, or Fin Wings: -20%
  • A full set of Victide armor: -20%
  • Diving Helmet, Diving Gear, or Jellyfish Diving Gear: -25%
  • Aquatic Emblem: -45% (inherits Gills and adds -25% on its own)
  • Neptune’s Shell, Moon Shell, or Celestial Shell: -15%
  • Aquatic Heart after Skeletron has been defeated: -30%
  • Arctic Diving Gear or Abyssal Diving Gear: -50% (inherits Diving Helmet and adds -25% on its own)
  • Abyssal Diving Suit: -100% (inherits Abyssal Diving Gear and Gills and adds -30% on its own)

This percentage reduction is capped at 95%. At this cap, the Abyss removes 20 times less breath from the player.

Drowning damage

A player drowning in the Abyss takes extra damage in addition to the vanilla game’s health drain from drowning. More precisely, the Abyss reduces the player’s health instead of their breath if their breath meter is empty. With no relevant equipment, drowning in the Abyss deals an extra 30 damage per second in Layer 1, 60 damage per second in Layer 2, 120 damage per second in Layer 3, and 240 damage per second in Layer 4. This damage is reduced by 30 per second if the Depths Charm or Abyssal Diving Gear is equipped; this damage is further reduced by 60 damage per second if the Abyssal Diving Suit is equipped. The extra drowning damage dealt by the Abyss is slowed down by all items which reduce the rate of breath loss.

Trivia[]

  • The Abyss is sometimes referred to as the netherworld.
  • The Abyss was inspired by buddhism, as it also has a similar conception of a down-spiralling hell made of different levels in which one is drawn to the bottom.
  • The idea for Made in Abyss was originally planned for Dōjinshi and the Abyss was far smaller initially in concept with a few tens of meters in width.
  • One of the biggest inspirations for the Abyss was the role-playing game, Xenoblade Chronicles.
  • All throughout the Abyss, Delvers report findings of human remnants from civilizations past. All of the skeletons have their hands clasped in prayer, earning them the name, «Praying Skeletons.» Little is known about their origin.
  • The island of the Abyss is based off Aogashima with a caldera and color scheme for the sea was based on a Southern island for the anime with the city itself trying to envoke a European feeling to it.

Light Level[]

Without a sufficient level of light, the player’s vision may be reduced (similarly to the Darkness debuff) or blackened completely (similarly to the Obstructed debuff), depending on how deep they’ve descended into the Abyss.

  • In Layer 1, the player’s vision will be reduced unless they have a light level of 1 or higher.
  • In Layer 2, the player’s vision will be blackened unless they have a light level of 1 or higher, and reduced unless they have a light level of 3 or higher.
  • In Layer 3, the player’s vision will be blackened unless they have a light level of 3 or higher, and reduced unless they have a light level of 5 or higher.
  • In Layer 4, the player’s vision will be blackened unless they have a light level of 5 or higher, and reduced unless they have a light level of 7 or higher.

In Death Mode, Abyss light level requirements are increased by 25%.

The following items increase the player’s light level. These values are cumulative, and stacking several of them at the same time is required for maximum vision in the Abyss. In Death Mode the effectiveness of light level increasing accessories and buffs is decreased by 25%.

  • Buffs and Accessories that increase light level by +1 / +0.75:

The Curse of the Abyss[]

Though the Abyss is riddled with countless dangers and hazards, one of the greatest challenges facing Delvers is, in fact, the ascent from it. This is due to a phenomenon called the Curse of the Abyss. The term refers to a series of symptoms that manifest upon ascending while inside the Abyss, with its more scientific name being the «Strains of Ascension». The effects of the Curse manifest after ascending around 10 meters within the Abyss, and there is no way to avoid it through conventional means. The Curse affects all living things; however, the creatures that inhabit the Abyss have developed ways to sense its flow and avoid it.

The deeper one delves, the more severe the symptoms are, starting at dizziness and nausea and gradually rising to intense pain throughout the body, loss of senses and even death. This makes the return trip from the Abyss extremely difficult, and it is not uncommon for Delvers to perish on the way up. Particularly, the curse of the 6th layer («loss of humanity or death») makes the return journey physically impossible for humans.

The Curse results from piercing the force field of the Abyss while ascending, although this fact is not generally known. Therefore, areas where the force field is weaker also result in the effects of the curse being less severe. In certain specific places, like Nanachi’s hideout and the Village of Ilblu, the force field isn’t present at all, and so the Curse doesn’t occur either.

Interactions[]

  • Baby-Bender / Box of Friends: Does not affect locusts.
  • Ipecac: Locusts will only gain +2 damage.
  • Sacrificial Altar: Locusts can be sacrificed for items.
  • Tainted Jacob / Tainted Lazarus: Locusts will disappear when changing between the 2 forms, and will not return when switching back.
  • Void: If Void consumes Abyss, the latter will take priority and using Void to consume another item pedestal will generate a locust. Even consuming active items will generate a locust, and Void will not copy that active item’s effect. This essentially causes Void to act identically to Abyss, albeit requiring 2 more charges per use.

The Abyss.

Personality[]

A coldness dominates her personality, and she can often be cruel, cynical and apathetic. Even after discovering Reg’s high durability during their fight, she continued to hit him anyways, citing that ‘after a while just got too into it’. She despises lying to children, and rarely lies to them — even if it means telling them brutal truths. Ozen has absolute control over her facial expressions, making her actual feelings (or lack thereof) normally ambiguous.

However, she is not completely devoid of warmth and it is shown that secretly she dearly cares for Lyza. When Riko and Reg left the Seeker Camp to journey into the depths of the Abyss, Ozen revealed that she would have liked it if she didn’t need to send them off before she could reminisce more about Lyza. She also treats her newest apprentice Marulk for the most part kindly, allowing him to stay at the Seeker Camp so that he wouldn’t have to suffer under the surface’s light.

Appearance[]

Faputa’s face, upper arms, and upper torso are dark in color. Her hair is long and feathery. Fluffy white fur covers her rabbit-like ears, forearms, legs, and lower body, starting at her hips. One of Faputa’s most noticeable traits is her four arms. On each of her hands are 3 large red claws, which act as fingers, with the forth and fifth folded away. Futhermore her folded away fingers have hidden delicate talons with sensing organs that function similar to the sense of smell. Red claw like protrusions are also on her hair, her knees, and the ends of her feet, similar to hooves.

Her eyes are yellow with large, rounded pupils. Behind her are 5 tails, which spread out in a fan. She has a pair of goggles slung over her shoulder which she received from Reg.

After having been fed the value of the bodies of Ilblu inhabitants, Faputa’s feathery hair, and tails, has grown longer with golden streaks and she gained a diamond-shaped symbol, with four diagonally aligned smaller diamonds in it and a star-like one in the middle of it, in her eyes.
