Quotes[]

Talking to him:

  • «Only a few weeks left on the force.»
  • «I’m retiring in 3 weeks… getting too old for this.»
  • «Have I shown you my pictures of my family?»
  • «Sending my daughter off to college soon. She’s a good kid.»
  • «Thirty years on this beat to the day. Never needed to draw my gun before.»
  • «You’re a loose cannon, kid, but you’re good police.»
  • «Let’s do this next one by the book.»
  • «You’re as wild as McNutty.»

Dying:

«Kid… listen up. Today might have been my last day on the force, and I might have only been down here because of you…but this ain’t your fault. Yeah, yeah, you let me get hit by all those bullets. Sure, you probably could’ve given me one of those fancy guns you’ve been hoarding. But the point is, this ain’t your fault. -cough- Give my badge to my kids. Tell them I love them.»

The Marine’s Route[]

Forge Elevator

The Marine’s Forge elevator is highly standard. A two leveled platform, with two smaller intermediary platforms to allow for easier ascension.

This elevator is identical to most other character’s initial elevators, save its decoration.

Notes

  • This elevator bears resemblance to some sort of military barrack.
  • There is no way to fall in this elevator.

Hollow Elevator

The Marine’s Hollow elevator features no enemies (save for perhaps the boss) in its main section. Instead, it serves as a hub area through which the player must access and beat five separate small rooms.

This is one of the few elevators to not feature an intermission room. Instead, the third mini-room cleared will always drop a .

Notes

  • This elevator features Skullets and Fallen Bullet Kin

This is the only place that Fallen Bullet Kin appear in Exit the Gungeon.

    in its columns.

  • There is no way to fall in this elevator.

Black Powder Mine Elevator

The Marine’s Mines elevator is horizontal rather than vertical, travelling at great speeds to the right on rails. The player is allowed to step down onto the tracks here without consequence, but if they linger long enough to go off screen they will take damage.

Notes

  • This ‘elevator’ appears to be some sort of supply cart, carrying large boxes of cargo.
  • The player also takes damage if they go off screen to the left, though this is significantly harder to do accidentally.
  • This elevator is functionally identical to the Mines elevator on the Bullet Route.

Gungeon Proper Elevator

The Marine’s is very generic in its layout. It has two main levels with one central intermediary platform to allow the player to traverse them.

It differs in the presence of four teleporter objects, placed in the top left, top right, bottom left, and bottom right of the elevator. These teleporters will either glow green or purple, with teleporters that glow the same colour being linked together.

The player can interact with these teleporters to be instantly transported to the teleporter’s linked counterpart. This de-activates all teleporters for a short time, and triggers a weak blank-like effect at the location of the player’s arrival. Once the teleporters come back online, they will have randomly changed their colour and therefore linkage.

Notes

  • These teleporter mechanics also appear in the Black Powder Mine elevator of the Robot Path.
  • There is no way to fall in this elevator.

Keep of the Lead Lord Elevator

The elevator is the same on all routes. It is a small rocket-powered free-moving platform in a much larger shaft. It drifts around the shaft, bouncing off the walls.

It has two main levels, and one special intermediary platform. This platform is much longer than its static counterparts, and is pushed in whenever the elevator presses against the shaft walls.

Mirrors[]

The Monster in the mirror.

Mirrors will show an unlocked chest in their reflection, which can be opened if the player presses the interact button while their reflection is next to the chest. This will shatter the mirror and increase the player’s curse by 3.5. The mirror will also shatter if the player shoots it, which will increase the player’s curse by the same amount and will make the location of the hidden chest much more difficult to find.

Notes

  • It is possible for chests in mirrors to be Mimics.
  • It is possible for chests in mirrors to be but they do not have the usual glitch animation.
  • In Rainbow Mode, Bowler will sit on where you have to be to open the chest in the mirror, although the chest will still be only visible in the mirror, making Bowler flying mid-air.
  • If a mirror chest appears, it may prevent the two treasure rooms from having one item and one gun. If the mirror chest has an item, both treasure rooms may have guns, and if the mirror chest has a gun, both treasure rooms may have items.
  • When playing as The Paradox or doing a run with the paradox effect active, the mirror will not reflect the effect on the player
  • You can freeze the mirror, obscuring the chest’s reflection. The chest can still be opened as usual, and the player will still be cursed upon opening.
  • Mirror chests cannot be shot. Bullets do not appear in the reflection and will not damage the chest.

Trivia

  • A monster’s eye briefly appears after shattering the mirror, which is purely aesthetic and serves no purpose. This was added in the Supply Drop Update.
  • The mirror may be a reference to the Mirror of Erised in the book ‘Harry Potter and the Philosopher’s Stone’, where an unlocked chest may well be the player’s greatest desire.
  • The curse effect upon breaking the mirror is a reference to the folk belief that breaking a mirror causes seven years of bad luck (3.5 curse is 7 x 0.5).

Notes[]

  • — If the player also has The Scrambler, its shot speed is increased by 50%.
  • — If the player has Elephant Gun, it becomes an elephant head and shoots elephants instead of bullets.
  • — If the player has Heroine, when Pig dies, Heroine’s ammo is fully refilled and it temporarily switches to Hyper Beam mode, where uncharged shots deal 80 damage and charged shots deal 160 damage. Heroine will automatically revert to its original form after 30 seconds.
  • — If the player has Composite Gun, its shots leave a trail of fire.
  • — If the player has Ring of Miserly Protection, purchases will not destroy the ring.
  • — If the player has T-Shirt Cannon, Trashcannon, Science Cannon, Luxin Cannon, Makeshift Cannon, Serious Cannon, Pulse Cannon, Poxcannon, or Vulcan Cannon, the pig turns green to resemble Cannon, and now shoots bat projectiles at nearby enemies. A Baby Good Mimic will not copy the synergy if the Pig gains the synergy after the Baby Good Mimic is collected.
  • — If the player also has Teapot, when reloading the teapot, a small red aura will appear around the pig. Every enemy in this aura will be ignited.
  • Does not revive a player in coop mode if they are not the last player standing, and may softlock the game.
  • If the player has Baby Good Mimic, acquiring Pig creates a second identical Pig companion. Both companions will sacrifice themselves to save the player.
  • If the player has Ration, both are triggered on death, resulting in loss of both.
  • If the player has Clone, Pig dies before Clone can trigger.
  • When the player has fire immunity and , the player can safely cover a room in fire with a few shots, especially if they also have Scattershot.
  • If the player has Fightsabre, the pig will be knocked back a significant distance when reloading.
  • You do not gain temporary invulnerability like you normally would when you take damage upon being revived, making it easy to take damage after coming back to life.
  • Since The Robot does not have maximum health or permanent health upgrades, they will always have the default six Armor upon being revived.

Notes[]

  • If Blasphemy is acquired as Robot, it will not fire projectiles as The Robot is technically never at full health.
  • The Robot deals 1 more damage with the Flame Hand than other characters, implying he has a higher intelligence modifier and therefore, higher intelligence.
  • Due to all non-rainbow chests being impossible to open in Rainbow Mode, it makes sense to destroy them instead. Besides the occasional pickup, this ends up giving you a lot of Junk. Consequently, the Robot excels in completing rainbow mode, as the 5% damage boosts will build up over the entirety of your junking spree. Its relatively strong starter weapon also means the player can pick an item instead of a weapon on the first floor.
  • The Robot can’t sell its health to the Vampire. As it technically has zero hearts, the Vampire will refuse to trade and say the Robot hungers as much as she does, a quote she tells other Gungeoneers at low health.
  • Patches and Mendy are unable to heal the Robot, and to compensate will give it a Bottle, Armor, or Junk, for free.
  • Using a Peace Shrine as the Robot consumes the active gun with no benefit.
  • As of A Farewell to Arms update, the Robot can use shrines that consume a heart container by losing two Armor.
  • Some effects from the Dice Shrine which affect health, like Bolstered, don’t affect The Robot.
  • The Robot cannot access the Hall of Knowledge because it is boarded off.
  • Unlike the other Gungeoneers, the robot falls into the Gungeon rather than descending down the staircase. If wearing its alternate costume, however, it enters normally.
  • Spice won’t take any armor from The Robot, only giving curse and lower accuracy, making it a very powerful item.

  • Though not direct unlocks, killing the Dragun allows the Sorceress, Tonic, and Bowler to appear trapped in Cells in the Gungeon after its defeat.

Trivia[]

  • Nicknames that NPCs refer to the Robot as include:
    • Machine
    • Automaton
    • Android
    • Mechano-man
    • Can-opener
    • Robert
    • Number 4
    • Colonel Klink
    • Toaster
    • Metal Head
  • Prior to patch 1.0.7, The Robot didn’t get any armor from picking up Master Rounds

Prior to the Advanced Gungeons & Draguns Update, The Robot did not get from items that grant heart containers.

    .

  • The nickname «Colonel Klink» is possibly a reference to the old American television show, Hogan’s Heroes, where Colonel Klink fits in the role of an oblivious colonel at a WWII camp.
  • The nickname «Number 4» is possibly a reference to the movie Short Circuit, where the main character is named Number 5.
  • The Robot’s starting gun is called «Robot’s Right Hand»; however, the art for the boss versus screen shows it readying its left hand, and not its right. This could be because of an inconsistency created by mirroring the art or, while unlikely, an implication that The Robot has swapped hands as to keep firing with its dominant hand.
  • The Robot’s past and alternate costume are references to the Terminator franchise.
    • The minions summoned by the Last Human resemble the T-800 Terminators.
    • The beginning of The Robot’s past where he boots up is the same as the T-800 Terminator boot-up, with the red screen and systems activating.
  • EMP-R0R’s appearance is a reference to Hal 9000.
  • The arena’s walls are filled with references to various franchises and games including (but not limited to):
    • A drawing of Mettaton from the game Undertale.
    • «Bots don’t shiv» is a reference to the phrase «I don’t shiv» from Batman: The Dark Knight Returns.
    • A drawing of a Reaper from the game Mass Effect
    • A drawing that refers to a jailbot of Superjail!.
    • A drawing of the «Robotology» religion symbol from .
    • A drawing of a Cylon from the Battlestar Galactica franchise.
    • A pair of drawings of Tom Servo and Crow T. Robot from Mystery Science Theater 3000.
    • A pair of drawings of Atlas and P-Body from the game Portal 2.
    • A drawing of an E Tank from the Megaman franchise.
    • Eight empty squares surrounding a «W» in the center, referencing the stage select screens from the Megaman franchise.
  • The robot sitting beside EMP-R0R resembles a sentinel from the Matrix franchise.
  • The minions of the Last Human turn into critters upon death. This is a reference to the Sonic franchise.
  • The other robots talk to each other using the word ‘ye’. This is a reference to .
    • Next to EMP-R0R stands a device resembling a hookah except with a plug, a reference to the act of «jacking off» from Futurama.
    • EMP-R0R’s pose and Roman styling may be a reference to Hedonismbot from Futurama.
  • According to the Ammonomicon entry for Robot’s Left Hand, the Robot, as well as most other robots, is left-handed.
  • The Robot’s face is made of keyboard symbols.
  • This character may be inspired by «??? (Blue Baby)» From The Binding of Isaac.

Notes[]

  • If the shopkeeper has been angered (ex. shooting in shop, stealing), he will not return after revival.
  • Allows the collection of duplicate Master Rounds on a single run, all of which count towards unlocking the Super Hot Watch.
  • If Pig was also acquired, it will activate first upon death.
  • If Gun Soul was also acquired, it will activate first upon death. If the player is killed a second time before retrieving their soul, Clone will respawn them as normal (without the cosmetic effect), but they will still be limited to one heart container. This can be fixed by using the Save Button and resuming the run, or by finding another Gun Soul in order to die and interact with the soul (in both cases, the returned heart containers will be empty).
  • If the run was started through a shortcut, the player will be revived on the floor that they started on.
  • Curse does not reset when respawning with Clone.
  • As The Robot cannot gain heart containers, it always respawns with 6 armor.
  • Clone does not carry over into the past; the player will not be revived if they die in the past.
  • If the player perfects the Resourceful Rat fights, he will still not steal from the player after revival.
  • Players can fight the Resourceful Rat again after respawning, however, upon entering the Resourceful Rat’s lair, any extra will disappear from the player’s inventory.
  • If the player is holding more than one Clone when they die, the extra Clones will also be removed from the player’s inventory when they revive. However, extra Clones can still be obtained after the player dies.
  • If the player obtains the before they die, it’s not lost after revival.
  • If the player is one hit away from death and takes damage while having Glass Guon Stones, they will not break and will remain with the player when they revive.
  • If the player respawns from a Clone, they can get another Clone in a chest afterwards. However, it’s extremely rare and usually happens in Rainbow Mode.
  • In co-op, if The Paradox starts with Clone, it can be traded with The Cultist and allows The Paradox to continuously carry clones whenever they die and when clone is activated from The Cultist, allowing excessive clone runs unless the game crashes or the players save and quit the game.
  • In co-op, if the player with Clone dies first, the Clone is consumed but the effect doesn’t trigger.

How to Unlock[]

The method to unlock the Paradox can only be accessed after killing at least one Past. In the Gungeon Proper, Black Powder Mine and the Hollow, there is a 20% chance that a cosmic rift will appear in a random room, which the player can walk into and interact with to receive a paradox effect. Killing the character’s past or the Lich with the effect active will unlock The Paradox.

Multiple cosmic rifts can appear in one run, and they can also appear during a Rainbow Run.

Saving and quitting the game will no longer remove the effect as it did previously. Dying and respawning with a Clone will also retain the effect.

Notes[]

  • Picking up Drill increases the chance of finding the other Payday 2 items, Loot Bag and Clown Mask.
  • The amount of enemies and waves is determined by the chest quality, usually having less enemies and waves when used on low-quality chests, and up to 5 waves for S quality chests. D tier (brown) chests will have a single wave, with 2-4 enemies. B tier (green) chests can have anywhere from 2-4 waves. They usually have at least 4-5 enemies per wave, but can occasionally spawn 6.
  • When the drill is used in the Keep of the Lead Lord, there’s a chance for it to spawn Bullet King

The same applies for Old King’s chancellor when used in the Abbey of the True Gun.

‘s chancellor, who will chase the player even if left unharmed.

  • It is possible for pickups to spawn after completing a wave, including other chests. If the player wants to keep them, they must grab them before they finish all the waves; otherwise, when the room returns to its normal size, the pickup may vanish, if the walls close over it. If it is in the center of the room it will remain.
  • The drill cannot be used on any chests that spawn after clearing a wave in the special drill room.
  • The drill cannot be used on the roof of the R&G Department if a chest spawns there after the boss is defeated.
  • Using the Drill on a fused chest will extinguish the fuse. However, the chest will appear without a fuse in the enlarged room.
  • The room will only return to its normal size once the player is inside the radius of the original room.
  • Drill can also be used to pick the locks on the trapdoor to Oubliette and the lock on the trapdoor that leads to the Resourceful Rat’s Lair.
  • The drill cannot be used on the lock that requires the Gnawed Key.
  • When the Drill is used during a Challenge Mode run, each new wave receives its own room modifier(s).
  • In the Switch release, completing the waves of enemies while using the drill may cause a game crash.
  • The drill appears to, on occasion, fail to render a complete arena, leaving some areas black or untextured; however, the collision remains intact.
  • The drill can be used on Brother Albern’s chest. The lock will fall off of it, but it still can’t be opened without speaking to him.
  • Chests opened by the drill are rendered indestructible.
  • If the player attempts to use Trusty Lockpicks on a chest and it fails, the Drill cannot be used on the chest.
  • The drill, if used on a door with a sentient lock, will not spawn any enemies, and will instead instantly vanquish the living lock.
  • If a chest spawns in the Resourceful Rat’s Lair, the drill cannot be used. However, it can be used to unlock the special rat chests after the boss fight.
  • The generated room is considered a different room, so leaving items on the floor before using the drill will result in them being stolen by the Resourceful Rat.
  • The drill does nothing to Mimics.

Trivia[]

  • After the effect of the item occurs, it will be permanently renamed to «Hero Pig», with a new description and pick-up quote that remain even after the run is over.
    • Pick-up quote: «He was so young.»
    • Description: «A hero pig. You should have never doubted this pig. He is a true hero.»
  • This item may be a reference to the German movie «Siegfried», where a pig saves the protagonist’s life by jumping in front of an arrow.
  • This item may also be a reference to a viral video titled «Hero Pig Saves Baby Goat,» in which a pig appears out of nowhere to assist a drowning baby goat. This may be unlikely, however, due to the fact that there was no sacrifice and the video was staged.
  • This item may be a reference to the anime «Seven Deadly Sins», where the talking pig Hawk, the Captain of the Order of Scraps Disposal, has identical properties.
  • This item may also be a reference to the video game «Minecraft : Story Mode» by Telltale games wherein the protagonist Jesse’s pet pig sacrifices himself to save him and the rest of the cast during the final battle against the Mutant Wither.
  • The synergy is a reference to the final fight against Mother Brain in Super Metroid, in which after the baby Metroid is killed, Samus gains the Hyper Beam.
  • The synergy refers to the stuffed pig carried by Marvin Boggs (played by John Malkovich) in RED. Malkovich also played the assassin in In the Line of Fire which the Composite Gun is based on.
  • The synergy is a reference to the in-game boss Cannon, himself a reference to Ganon from the Legend of Zelda

The pig’s green color may also be an Angry Birds reference

video game series. The synergy name refers to Cannon returning in some formvia the appearance of the pig. The synergy being named «The Return» may also be a reference to the game-over screen from Legend of Zelda 2: Adventure of Link, which includes the line «RETURN OF GANON».

Keys[]

Keys are used to open locked chests and doors, as well as the trapdoor to the Oubliette and the trapdoor to the passageway to the Resourceful Rat’s Lair.

Every Shop apart from the Forge’s shop will always have at least one key for sale.

Flynt uses keys instead of coins in exchange for his items.

Cell Keys

Cell keys are used to open cells to free NPCs. On any floor with a cell, a cell key will drop from a random enemy on the floor (including the boss). They cannot be used as regular keys. Cell keys are automatically collected by the player if they attempt to leave them behind.

Rat Keys

Rat keys are used to open and certain doors. They are obtained from the third phase of the Resourceful Rat fight. They cannot be used as regular keys. Rat Keys are automatically collected by the player if they attempt to leave them behind.

The Bullet’s Route[]

Forge

The Bullet’s Forge elevator is largely standard. A two leveled platform, with two smaller intermediary platforms to allow for easier ascension. Its one major deviation comes in the form of a large hole in the center of the lower level, posing a significant falling risk, and restricting the player’s movement options.

Notes

This elevator is functionally identical to the Hollow elevators of the Hunter and Robot paths.

Hollow

The Bullet’s Hollow elevator consists of five separate pillars, each sporting an extra raised platform atop them. These pillars are each adorned with a switch (possibly intended to be the hammer of a gun). At random, these switches will move to a downwards position, causing their respective pillars to lower. The switch will stay in this position for a short time before flicking back to an upwards position, causing the platform to return to a neutral state.

Notes

  • This elevator is highly similar (but not identical) to the Hollow elevator on the Convict path.
  • Thanks to the way the switches on the pillars work, it is very simple to predict when a pillar is going to raise back to a neutral state.
    • It is not as simple, however, to predict when the pillars will lower.
    • With certain bosses, instead of spawning a default boss elevator, the pillars will level out and cease moving, and the upper platforms will descend and be replaced by a metallic covering. This causes the elevator to assume a shape identical to that of the default boss elevator.
  • There is no way to fall in this elevator.

Gallery

Black Powder Mine

The Bullet’s Mines elevator is horizontal rather than vertical, travelling at great speeds to the right on rails. The player is allowed to step down onto the tracks here without consequence, but if they linger long enough to go off screen they will take damage.

Notes

  • This elevator appears to be some sort of tank, possibly the remains of the Treadnaught.
  • The player also takes damage if they go off screen to the left, though this is significantly harder to do accidentally.
  • This elevator is functionally identical to the Mines elevator on the Bullet Route.
  • Occasionally a Tanker will poke its head out of the hatch on the right side of the elevator. This is purely aesthetic, and has no actual effect.

Gallery

The appearance of the Tanker peeking out.

Gungeon Proper

The Bullet’s Gungeon Proper elevator is a small, free-moving rocket-powered elevator in a wider shaft. It consists of two main levels, a smaller intermissive platform for easy climbing, and two buttons on the left and right of the lower level. Pressing these buttons causes the elevator to move in their respective direction, either left or right.

Periodically the elevator will encounter wall-mounted scaffolding piled high with wooden crates marked with skulls. These scaffolds can either be on the left of the shaft, the right of the shaft, or suspended precariously in the middle of the shaft. Scaffolds in the center are typically much smaller, and contain much fewer crates.

If these crates make contact with the elevator they will burst, with each crate having a chance to release a ring of bullets upon doing so. The player is intended to maneuver the elevator to avoid these scaffolds and crates, to avoid complicating fighting the numerous enemies. Despite this, it is possible to complete the elevator without once touching the buttons.

Notes

  • This elevator bears some similarities to the Hollow elevator on the Pilot’s Path.
  • It is impossible to avoid scaffolding in the middle of the shaft, though due to its decreased crate capacity it is rarely very dangerous.

Minecarts[]

A TNT barrel inside a Minecart.

Minecarts are found in the Black Powder Mine. Interacting with a minecart lets a Gungeoneer ride along minecart tracks. Bullet Kin, Red Shotgun Kin, and Executioners can also ride minecarts.

Additionally, some minecarts can contain explosive barrels or mechanical turrets which fire at the player. These turrets can be destroyed with explosions, after which the minecart is free to be ridden.

If the player dodge rolls while not touching any of the movement keys, then they will not exit the minecart and will only dodge roll. If the player is moving, they will dodge roll out of the minecart; if they touch another cart in the process, they’ll automatically ride it. This technique is used to acquire the Arcane Gunpowder in the Black Powder Mine.

Minecarts that the player is riding in are not affected by friction; a moving minecart will automatically continue to move along the track until the player exits it.

In co-op, two players can occupy the same minecart, but only one player will be able to steer it.

Hearts[]

Hearts replenish the player’s health upon picking them up. As expected, half hearts will restore half a heart of health, while full hearts heal a full heart.

The Robot cannot pick up hearts as it does not have any heart containers.

If the player has full health, they can interact with health pickups to save them for later. This health may then be picked up at a health dispenser located at the entrance to the next floor and at shops. The amount of health stored in the dispenser will be reset each floor. A drawing at the bottom left of the map (not the mini-map) indicates how many half-hearts are currently stored in the dispenser. In the Forge, hearts stored will appear in the elevator room where you first spawn.
If the player picks up a full heart while missing only half a heart, the second half will not be stored.

Hearts can be stored for later in Bullet Hell, in which case the health dispenser will appear in the entrance of Bullet Hell and the room just before the Lich.
